Burnham & Morrill began in Portland, ME as a canning company for various meats and fruits. Canned corn was particularly hard to can but one of the partners came up with a patent for a corn canning machine and canneries were established all over Maine. In 1900 they introduced canned Fish Flakes from haddock and codfish and it became quite popular in chowders and cod cakes. In 1920 he purchased the Dixie Flying Field in Birmingham Al hoping to open a flight school but he decided to build planes and thus the Stinson Plane Co was born.
