1910 Burnham & Morrill Fish Flakes Magazine Ad
Burnham & Morrill began in Portland, ME as a canning company for various meats and fruits. Canned corn was particularly hard to can but one of the partners came up with a patent for a corn canning machine and canneries were established all over Maine. In 1900 they introduced canned Fish Flakes from haddock and codfish and it became quite popular in chowders and cod cakes. The company continued to expand and became more famous for their oven baked beans which they continue to produce today in open pots inside brick ovens.
